OBERLIN COLLEGE BICYCLE SHELTERS:
Oberlin College is a very bicycle-oriented campus located in the Midwest United States. Frequently subjected to inclement weather, the College recognized the need to provide sheltered bike parking for the students on the campus. One of the primary areas for such use is located in front of the Mudd Library in the center of the campus. The resulting design uses the very modern geometric façade as a backdrop for an elegant sculptural interpretation of the bicycle itself. The roof of the structure symbolizes the sheltering function of a bicycle fender while the circular supports with radiating struts are an abstraction of the wheel. Use of a translucent roof material allows dappled light to brighten the area beneath.
